Insights that advance infection prevention.
Standardizing Skin Prep for Injections, IV Lines and Vaccinations
Infection prevention programmes tend to focus on the operating room, yet most skin punctures happen somewhere else: outpatient clinics, dialysis units, infusion centres and vaccination sites. Each is a small aseptic procedure, and each deserves the same discipline as a surgical prep.
The consistency gap
Outside theatre, preparation often relies on cotton balls, gauze and a multi-use bottle. Technique varies between clinicians, dwell time is rarely measured and documentation is sparse. In high-volume settings the gap widens further, because throughput pressure rewards speed over sequence.
Why CHG fits the clinic
- Broad-spectrum and fast. 2% CHG in 70% IPA reduces skin flora within seconds of application and keeps suppressing it well beyond the procedure.
- Visible technique. A saturated pad makes coverage obvious, so supervisors can confirm the field was properly prepared.
- Single use by design. Applicators eliminate the shared bottle and the handling steps that go with it.
- Consistent dose. Every applicator carries the same volume, which simplifies training and audit across sites and shifts.
Vaccination days at scale
Mass immunisation brings its own constraints: temporary stations, rotating staff and thousands of consecutive punctures. Pre-packed antiseptic applicators keep the sequence identical at every station, and they can be counted at the end of the day to reconcile usage against doses administered.
Asepsis is a habit, and habits are built from supplies that make the correct step the easiest step.
Getting started
Map the puncture points in your facility, choose one applicator format that suits each setting, and write the dwell time into the procedure note. Then audit what is recorded against what is stocked. When the two agree, the routine is genuinely in place.
