Audit-Ready Infection Prevention: Digital Tracking Meets CHG Protocols
Infection prevention has an evidence problem that is not really about evidence. Hospitals know which prep protocol works; what they struggle to show is whether that protocol was followed on a given shift, in a given room, for a given patient. Documentation is usually written afterwards, often from memory.
From recollection to record
Digitising the prep step changes the nature of the record. Scanning a single-use applicator at the point of care creates a timestamp, a product identity and a location with no additional typing. The result is a trail that describes practice rather than intention.
What the data makes visible
- Coverage by unit. Usage counts reconciled against procedures reveal where supplies disappear without a corresponding record.
- Dwell-time adherence. The interval between scan and puncture shows whether the stated contact time is real or assumed.
- Stock and expiry control. Lot-level tracking flags applicators approaching expiry before they reach a patient.
- Training targets. Repeat deviations cluster around specific shifts, sites or onboarding cohorts, which makes coaching precise.
You cannot audit a habit you never recorded. Digital capture turns a clinical routine into a measurable process.
Keeping it light for clinicians
Adoption depends on removing work rather than adding it. The strongest programmes attach tracking to steps staff already perform, keep the interface to a single scan, and return results to ward teams as short monthly summaries instead of dashboards nobody opens.
The compliance dividend
When preparation is traceable, accreditation visits and internal audits become a matter of retrieval rather than reconstruction. Teams can show what was used, when and by whom, and they can demonstrate improvement over time. That is a stronger position than any single inspection result.
